on creole: Language and culture
Most of the people in Edna's life are Creole, but do you know what that means? Her status as an outsider means that she does not understand all of the social nuances that her peers accept as "normal." In fact, the author comments more than once that Edna does not understand the Croeles' rules and quirks of behavior.

Romanticism
Mary Shelley was born in 1797. She was the daughter of Mary Wollstonecraft (English writer, philosopher, and advocate of women's rights) and William Godwin (English journalist, political philosopher and novelist). You can learn some quick facts about her childhood (including a stepmother who didn't particularly care for Mary) by visiting Biography.com. The visitor's list to the Godwin home included Romantic poets Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth. It is no surprise that she had an unusually thorough education for a female of the time period. For more on Mary, check out this fantastic BBC video on Mary's life. It's positively scandalous!

Prometheus is one of German composer Listz's symphonic poems. According to Wikipedia, the piece "was composed to illustrate the imprisonment, pain, hope, and the final triumph of Prometheus (but) turned out to be incomprehensible to the contemporary public because of the many dissonances in the music."
